Answers that will help folks understand that vaccines are safe, effective, and necessary.
Take the question about antigens for instance.
“13. What is an antigen?”
If you believe vaccines save lives I have 40 Questions for you
An antigen is simply something that your body can make an immune response against. It is how we develop both natural and vaccine induced immunity to infections.
Now, when it comes to vaccines, the big thing to know about antigens is that even though we do give more vaccines to protect kids against more diseases, combined, all of those vaccines have far fewer antigens than they ever did in the past!

That’s right!
There are no questions about the risks and complications of getting a vaccine preventable disease when you are intentionally unvaccinated.
Rubella Vaccine Question and Answers
And although we have explained that no vaccines actually contain aborted fetal tissue, the rest of this question, which is almost certainly about the rubella vaccine, should be answered.
“10. Do vaccines contain aborted fetal tissue? If so, which vaccines? How many aborted babies were needed before they found one with the virus necessary to create the vaccine?”
If you believe vaccines save lives I have 40 Questions for you
The rubella virus was first isolated in 1961 by two different researchers.
They initially recovered the virus from the urine and throat washing of people with rubella infections.
In both cases, human embryonic cells were used to grow the virus.
“The devastating consequences of the rubella epidemic left no doubt that a vaccine was needed, and many groups set to work. The common denominator was attenuation by passage in cell culture, since it had become clear with other viruses that such passage usually resulted in selection for lower virulence in vivo. Parkman, Meyer, and colleagues attenuated rubella virus in AGMK cell cultures (HPV-77), Hilleman et al. in duck embryo cells (HPV-77/DEV), Prinzie et al. in rabbit kidney (Cendehill), and I and my colleagues in a human diploid fibroblast cell strain. The HPV-77 virus developed by Parkman was also adapted for commercial use in dog kidney cell cultures.”
The History of Rubella and Rubella Vaccination Leading to Elimination
While other vaccines were made, the human diploid fibroblast vaccine (RA 27/3) eventually became the rubella vaccine that we use, as it caused fewer side effects and it was the only one that prevented reinfection with wild rubella.
“Explant cultures were made of the dissected organs of a particular fetus aborted because of rubella, the 27th in our series of fetuses aborted during the 1964 epidemic.”

The issue of abortion and vaccines is understandably controversial, still, it is very important to note that the therapeutic abortions that were occurring during the 1964 rubella epidemic were because of the fear of having a baby with congenital rubella syndrome after exposure to someone with rubella while pregnant.
These abortions were not done to make the vaccine!
“During the last major rubella epidemic in the United States from 1964 to 1965, an estimated 12.5 million people got rubella, 11,000 pregnant women lost their babies, 2,100 newborns died, and 20,000 babies were born with congenital rubella syndrome (CRS).”
The Horror of German Measles in the 1960s and Today
It is also important to understand that since then, the rubella vaccine has:
- helped worldwide cases of congenital rubella syndrome drop from 121,000 cases a year in 1996 to about 32,000 cases in 2019
- eliminated rubella in the United States
What else should you know about the rubella vaccine?
“Each year, 25% of the world’s children lack access to rubella vaccines and more than 30,000 infants are born with CRS.”
The Measles and Rubella Partnership Fact Sheet
The rubella vaccine could have an even bigger impact if it were simply used more often.

If you believe that we should save lives, then there should be no question that you should support the wider use of vaccines to save those lives.
