Why do some people think that 17 countries have banned the Oxford-Astra Zeneca COVID-19 vaccine?

The usual suspects…
Have 17 Countries Banned the Oxford-Astra Zeneca COVID-19 Vaccine?
So what’s the truth?
“No country has outright banned the vaccine.”
17 countries haven’t ‘banned’ the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine
Whether it is 17 or 21, it is important to note that these countries have not banned any COVID-19 vaccine.
In an abundance of caution, these countries have temporarily paused use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
“In extensive vaccination campaigns, it is routine for countries to signal potential adverse events following immunization. This does not necessarily mean that the events are linked to vaccination itself, but it is good practice to investigate them. It also shows that the surveillance system works and that effective controls are in place.”

Isn’t that the same thing as a ban?
“The vaccine will not be used until at least March 29 as a precaution, the Dutch government said in a statement.”

I guess it is the same thing as a temporary ban…
“Italy, France, Germany and several other countries will resume administering AstraZeneca jabs from Friday after Europe’s medicines regulator said the vaccine was “safe and effective” and its benefits outweighed its risks.”

A temporary ban that is already over.
“Overall the number of thromboembolic events reported after vaccination, both in studies before licensing and in reports after rollout of vaccination campaigns (469 reports, 191 of them from the EEA), was lower than that expected in the general population. This allows the PRAC to confirm that there is no increase in overall risk of blood clots.”
COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca: benefits still outweigh the risks despite possible link to rare blood clots with low blood platelets
The European Medicines Agency (EMA), after launching a review, has concluded that the “the vaccine is not associated with an increase in the overall risk of blood clots (thromboembolic events) in those who receive it.”
“However, based on pre-COVID figures it was calculated that less than 1 reported case of DIC might have been expected by 16 March among people under 50 within 14 days of receiving the vaccine, whereas 5 cases had been reported. Similarly, on average 1.35 cases of CVST might have been expected among this age group whereas by the same cut-off date there had been 12. A similar imbalance was not visible in the older population given the vaccine.”

There is still some concern of a very rare risk of unusual blood clots in patients under age 55 years, although it is not yet known if these blood clots are caused by the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
“Because COVID-19 can be so serious and is so widespread, the benefits of the vaccine in preventing it outweigh the risks of side effects.”

So while there will be a continued review of these risks and the package leaflet will be updated to include this possible risk, vaccinations with the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine will now resume in most countries.
And that’s a good thing, as deaths from COVID-19 didn’t take a pause.
