Fact Checking the Centner Academy Letter to Parents and Teachers

You may have heard that the Centner Academy, a Florida school founded by David and Leila Centner, is not allowing teachers to get vaccinated and protected against COVID-19 because they think the COVID-19 vaccines shed spike proteins.

Not surprisingly, the Centner Academy letter to parents, teachers, and staff is full of anti-vaccine talking points.

Of course, this isn’t true.

To be clear, the part about shedding isn’t true.

“It was an eventful week that also included an important meeting among our faculty and staff where we shared the difficult decision that moving forward, until further notice, we ask any employee who has not yet taken the experimental COVID-19 injection, to wait until the end of the school year. We also recommended that all faculty and staff hold off on taking the injection until there is further research available on whether this experimental drug is impacting unvaccinated individuals. It is our policy, to the extent possible, not to employ anyone who has taken the experimental COVID-19 injection until further information is known.”

Leila Centner

The school really is encouraging teachers to not get vaccinated!

In an email that she sent to teachers and staff, “with a heavy heart,” Leila Centner said that:

“COVID-19 Vaccines are still in an experimental state. They are not yet FDA approved, rather they have Emergency Use Authorization. Clinical trials are not scheduled to be complete until 2023. It will be years before we have reliable information regarding short and long term effects of the COVID-19 vaccines.”

Leila Centner

Three COVID-19 vaccines, from Pfizer, Moderna, and Janssen, have indeed received EUA from the FDA for use in the United States.

Like most vaccines, they have completed phase I, II, and III clinical trials and have been found to be safe and effective. And like most vaccines, clinical trials are ongoing to confirm long term safety and efficacy.

“COVID-19 vaccines are not a life saving medication. They have not been proven to prevent death from COVID or to prevent transmission of COVID.”

Leila Centner

What?

COVID-19 vaccines work!
COVID-19 vaccines work!

In addition to the fact that there have only been 74 deaths among the 75 million people who have been vaccinated, at a time when there were over 15 million cases of COVID-19 and over 267 thousand people died, there are studies that prove Leila Centner wrong.

“In a large, diverse cohort in the United States, full immunization with mRNA vaccines was highly effective in the real-world scenario at preventing Covid-19 related hospitalization and death.”

She may not know that they have been proven to prevent death, but the rest of us do.

“Our findings provide strong evidence that vaccinating working-age adults will substantially reduce SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our findings after 2 months of vaccine introduction show that the BNT62b2 vaccine protects against both symptomatic and asymptomatic infection, and, therefore, might help to reduce transmission of infection in the population.”

Many COVID-19 vaccines have also been shown to prevent transmission of SARS-CoV-2!

“I believe strongly in Health Freedom and “my body, my choice” and for that reason, did not prevent employees from choosing to take the COVID-19 vaccine prior to April 21, 2021. However, reports have surfaced of non-vaccinated people being negatively impacted by interacting with people who have been vaccinated. There have been thousands of reports of menstrual cycles being impacted and a 366% Increase in Miscarriages.”

Leila Centner

So much for vaccine choice

No safety signals about an increase in miscarriages has been reported.

How about a choice to avoid misinformation about vaccines?

“Because this new information has introduced the possibility that vaccinated individuals may be inadvertently impacting the health of others, I am compelled to take action until further information is available. Even among our own population, we have at least three women with menstrual cycles impacted after having spent time with a vaccinated person.”

Leila Centner

There is no new information, expect the misinformation that anti-vaccine folks are pushing about shedding.

Many women have reported menstrual cycle irregularities all through the COVID-19 pandemic, likely due to stress.

The Centner Academy Letter to Parents and Teachers Fact Check

Like everything else in the Centner Academy Letter to parents and teachers, there is no evidence that recently vaccinated people are shedding. These teachers and staff members who avoid getting vaccinated to keep their job will be left at risk to get COVID-19, a life threatening disease, and risk getting their friends and family members sick too.
