Can Vaccines Cause Diabetes?

Why do some people think that vaccines can cause diabetes?

Anti-vaccine folks commonly push the idea that vaccines cause diabetes.

The usual suspects…

Can Vaccines Cause Diabetes?

And diabetes is listed on the package insert for some vaccines!

An entry in a package insert is not evidence that vaccines are associated with diabetes.
An entry in a package insert is not evidence that vaccines are associated with diabetes.

But folks can be reassured that there are many studies that have concluded that vaccines are not associated with diabetes.

“Vaccines currently routinely recommended to the general population in the U.S.* do not cause diabetes.”

Do Vaccines Cause Diabetes?

Not only that, vaccines help protect kids with diabetes. Remember, kids with diabetes are at increased risk to get flu and pneumonia and other vaccine preventable diseases.

There’s more too.

“There was a 33% reduction in the risk of type 1 diabetes with completion of the rotavirus vaccine series compared to the unvaccinated… We conclude that rotavirus vaccination is associated with a reduced incidence of type 1 diabetes.”

Rogers et al on Lower Incidence Rate of Type 1 Diabetes after Receipt of the Rotavirus Vaccine in the United States, 2001–2017

Vaccines might even be protective against diabetes!

So why do some people think that vaccines can cause diabetes???

Do Preemies Frequently Crash After They Get Their Hep B Shot?

Why do some folks think that preemies frequently crash after they get their Hep B shot?

Do you think that Michael Master, a chiropractor, has spent much time in the NICU?
Do you think that Michael Master, a chiropractor, has spent much time in the NICU?

Because it is a common anti-vaccine myth that they do…

Do Preemies Frequently Crash After They Get Their Hep B Shot?

We hear it over and over from the usual suspects.

Did a NICU nurse tell her about the crash carts???
Did a NICU nurse tell her about the crash carts???

And they have been posting about it for years.

Who are these NICU nurses that tell these stories?
Who are these NICU nurses that tell these stories?

It is always the same story too, that they have heard stories from NICU nurses that they get crash carts ready before giving preemies their vaccines.

Crash carts?

That we keep seeing these posts about NICU nurses, but never a post from a NICU nurse should tell you something...
That we keep seeing these posts about NICU nurses, but never a post from a NICU nurse should tell you something…

A crash cart or code cart is a self-contained, wheeled cart with trays and drawers that include all of the supplies you need in a medical emergency.

I have worked in a lot of NICUs and have never seen anyone get a crash cart ready when vaccinating a baby...
I have worked in a lot of NICUs and have never seen anyone get a crash cart ready when vaccinating a baby…

Of note, none of these posts are actually from neonatologists or NICU nurses.

They are all from folks who had supposedly read or heard about the posts from the NICU nurses, but in reality, they are likely familiar with them because it has become a common anti-vaccine talking point.

As I’m sure you have guessed, they aren’t true.

Premature babies do not frequently crash after getting their hepatitis B vaccine

For one thing, premature babies do not frequently crash after getting their hepatitis B vaccine.

“Vaccines are immunogenic, safe and well tolerated in preterm infants. Preterm infants should be vaccinated using the same schedules as those usually recommended for full-term infants, with the exception of the hepatitis B vaccine, where additional doses should be administered in infants receiving the first dose during the first days of life if they weighed less than 2000g because of a documented reduced immune response.”

Gagneur et al on Immunization of preterm infants.

The hepatitis B vaccine is safe, with few side effects.

Anyway, crash carts are always ready and nearby in the NICU!

These babies are in an Intensive Care Unit, so you are always ready and prepared for them to crash, doing everything you can to prevent that from happening.

Guess Who Thinks Vaccines Are Connected to Mass Shootings?

It’s hard to think that the modern anti-vaccine movement could sink any lower, after all, they have recently been called out for lying about vaccinating their kids, selling fake vaccine exemptions, bringing up the Holocaust when talking about vaccines and autism, and of course scaring parents away from vaccinating and protecting their kids in the middle of the largest measles outbreak in 25 years.

Guess Who Thinks Vaccines Are Connected to Mass Shootings?

Not surprisingly, they weren’t done…

Larry Cook and his followers at Stop Mandatory Vaccination think that vaccines are connected to mass shootings.

A recent discussion on an anti-vaccine Facebook group asking if there was a connection between vaccines and mass shootings got nearly 1000 comments.

What’s the overall consensus of the group?

Of course they do!

“NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred over the weekend in Texas and Ohio. These mass shootings are far too common and impact every corner of our nation. Every time we experience a tragedy like this, people with mental illness are drawn into the conversation. The truth is that the vast majority of violence is not perpetrated by people with mental illness. Statements to the contrary only serve to perpetuate stigma and distract from the real issues.

NAMI sees gun violence as a national public health crisis that impacts everyone.”

NAMI Statement on Mass Shootings in Texas and Ohio

Even Larry Cook, the groups founder, has his own secret theory about how vaccines are associated with mass shootings. My guess is that his conspiracy theory involves nanobots…

There is only one real question we should have about all of this…

Do you want tetanus? Because this is how you get tetanus?

Does the MMR Vaccine Cause More Seizures Than Measles?

The MMR vaccine doesn’t cause seizures in 1 in 640 children…

Posts like this about seizures and the MMR vaccine are why folks are reporting anti-vaccine Facebook groups for Fake News?

The MMR vaccine doesn’t even cause seizures!

“The MMR vaccine has been associated with a very small risk of febrile seizure as a side effect. Two recent studies indicate that for every 10,000 children who get the MMR and varicella vaccines for their first vaccinations when they are 12–23 months old, about 4 will have a febrile seizure during the 5–12 days following vaccination.”

Understanding the Risk of Febrile Seizures After the First Vaccination at Ages 12–47 Months

It can cause febrile seizures, but even then, it is only at about a rate of 1 in 2500 children after the first dose (0.04%).

Is that “five times the rate from the actual measles infection?”

As I’m sure you are guessing, the answer is obviously no.

Overall, seizures occur in about 0.6% to 0.7% of measles cases!

In addition, actual measles infections can cause non-febrile seizures, which are much more serious than febrile seizures.

Also, measles can cause encephalitis, a life-threatening complication that is often accompanied by seizures.

This is in contrast to simple febrile seizures, which again, are typically considered to be harmless.
