The measles outbreak has set a new record!
No, it isn’t the largest measles outbreak that we have seen in recent years.

That record belonged to the 2025 Texas measles outbreak, which reached a case count of 762 in just seven months.
At least it did until the measles outbreak in South Carolina. It grew to 997 cases in six months!
The Utah Measles Outbreak Sets a New Record
And while the Utah measles outbreak will hopefully not grow that big, it has already broken another record.

A record that had been held by the 2019 Brooklyn outbreak, which reached 654 cases in 11 months.

Going longer than any other recent outbreak, the Utah measles outbreak has grown to 687 cases in 12 months, becoming the longest measles outbreak since the end of the endemic spread of measles in 2000.
In fact, it has become the longest outbreak since at least 1991!
If you remember, that’s when the very large measles outbreaks ended that had lasted since 1989 and led to 55,622 cases and 123 deaths across the United States.

And if you have been paying attention, with rising cases and fewer people getting vaccinated, you know that’s where we are headed.

We are headed to larger outbreaks that will last longer and will be harder to control. And of course, more measles will bring more hospitalizations, more complications, and more deaths.
