Is Novavax Giving Incentives to Fill Clinical Trial Slots for Babies and Kids?

Why do some people think that Novavax is giving incentives to fill clinical trial slots for babies and kids?

Novavax is not paying parents $3000 to fill clinical trial slots for babies and kids.
Misinformation about COVID vaccine clinical trials for young children. How did we get here? These days, the answer is often because of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr

The usual suspects…

Is Novavax Giving Incentives to Fill Clinical Trial Slots for Babies and Kids?

While on the one hand anti-vaccine influencers say vaccines aren’t well tested, it is also easy to see that they don’t actually want any clinical trials to be done…

Consider the false claim from Children’s Health Defense, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr’s organization, who says that “Novavax is offering parents up to $3,000 to enroll their children in the vaccine maker’s Phase 2/3 COVID-19 vaccine trial for infants and children ages 6 months to 11 years.”

Wait, isn’t that true though?

Payments for Participating in a Clinical Trial

The folks doing the study do say that you will be compensated if you participate in the study.

“You will be compensated for your time and travel regardless of your immigration status. Transportation to the study site may also be provided, as available. No health insurance is required to participate.”

Yes, but as with other clinical vaccine trials, participants are only compensated for their time and travel expenses!

Giving payments for participating in a clinical trial is a common practice.
These parents are volunteering for a vaccine study. Should they also have to pay for the gas to get to the study site each time? Of course not, those are the type of expenses for which they are reimbursed.

And as this study that involves traveling to the study site at least 8 times, those expenses could build up.

“In contrast to payment for participation, FDA does not consider reimbursement for travel expenses to and from the clinical trial site and associated costs such as airfare, parking, and lodging to raise issues regarding undue influence. Other than reimbursement for reasonable travel and lodging expenses, IRBs should be sensitive to whether other aspects of proposed payment for participation could present an undue influence, thus interfering with the potential subjects’ ability to give voluntary informed consent.”

Payment and Reimbursement to Research Subjects

So there is no big conspiracy.

This is simply a vaccine study for which participants can have their travel and lodging expenses reimbursed. Expenses which might include meals, mileage, parking, and airfare and hotel stay (in general, only if traveling more than 200 miles away from the study site).

It is so that these folks do not lose money being in the vaccine study.

Why are we still doing saline placebo studies with COVID vaccines when we have safe and effective COVID vaccines for children that could have been used in the control group? Even though this is a crossover study, those who receive the saline placebo won’t be protected for many months.

A study, when complete, which will hopefully give us another option for a safe and effective COVID vaccine for younger children!
