Why do some people think that Tom Shimabukuro, the Director of the CDC Vaccine Task Force, say that COVID vaccines were causing debilitating illnesses?

The usual suspects…
Did Tom Shimabukuro Say COVID Vaccines Were Causing Debilitating Illnesses?
Of course, Tom Shimabukuro didn’t actually say that at the 178th Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) meeting on 1/26/2023?
So what did he say?
Tom Shimabukuro, who was the Deputy Director for the Immunization Safety Office in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, actually said that:
“We take vaccine safety very seriously. With respect to reports of people experiencing debilitating illnesses, I mean, we are, we are aware of these reports of people experiencing long lasting health problems following COVID vaccination. In some cases, the clinical presentations of people suffering these health problems is variable and no specific medical cause for the symptoms have been found. We understand that illnesses are disruptive and stressful, especially under those circumstances. We acknowledge these health problems have substantially impacted the quality of life for people and have also affected those around them. And we hope for improvement and recovery. We will continue to monitor the safety of these vaccines and work with partners to try and better understand these types of adverse events.”
Tom Shimabukuro
So no, he didn’t admit that “COVID vaccines were causing debilitating illnesses.”
He simply said that he was aware of reports of debilitating illnesses and they were investigating possible causes.
Wait, what kind of reports?
They were likely VAERS reports, which are not evidence that a vaccine caused the condition in the report! Remember, VAERS is a passive reporting system.

And what was the outcome of these investigations?
Many studies have been done and they have mostly linked long-COVID to folks who were unvaccinated. In fact, getting vaccinated and protected seems to be protective against long-COVID!
- Effect of covid-19 vaccination on long covid: systematic review – Current studies suggest that covid-19 vaccines might have protective and therapeutic effects on long covid.
- Long COVID risk and pre-COVID vaccination in an EHR-based cohort study from the RECOVER Program – people who were vaccinated before having COVID-19 were less likely to develop Long COVID.
- A systematic review and meta-analysis of the impact of vaccination on prevention of long COVID – These findings indicate that booster vaccination can provide additional protection against long COVID, highlighting the importance of seasonal vaccination against new SARS-CoV-2 variants.
- Vaccination cuts the risk of long COVID 27%, review suggests
- COVID vaccine protected kids from long COVID – Unvaccinated children and adolescents were up to 20 times more likely to develop long COVID than their vaccinated peers
- Effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines to prevent long COVID: data from Norway – in summary, we show the real-world effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines to prevent long COVID symptoms and post-COVID thromboembolic and cardiovascular complications among the Norwegian population, consistent with previous findings from other countries (UK, Spain, and Estonia).
- The effect of pre-COVID and post-COVID vaccination on long COVID: A systematic review and meta-analysis – Our study suggests that 2-dose pre-COVID vaccination and 1-dose post-COVID vaccination are associated with a lower risk of long COVID. Since long COVID reduces quality of life substantially, vaccination could be a possible measure to maintain quality of life by partially protecting against long COVID.
But is it possible to develop long-COVID symptoms after being vaccinated?
There have been rare case reports describing a rare link between long-COVID-like illnesses in those who had gotten a COVID vaccine.
“Cases seem very rare—far less common than Long Covid after infection.”
Rare link between coronavirus vaccines and Long Covid–like illness starts to gain acceptance
But understand that the overwhelming evidence points to long-COVID being caused by a natural COVID infection and towards COVID vaccines being protective against long COVID.
Not towards it being a vaccine injury.

What else, despite what anti-vaccine influencers claim, there is no evidence that spike proteins stick around in our blood after we are vaccinated for long periods of time. That they do is simply a misrepresentation of a study that found ‘peptides,’ or a part of the spike protein in some patients.
And yet again, we see anti-vaccine influencers creating propaganda to try to mislead folks into skipping or delay getting vaccinated and protected.
