We have already had at least 173 cases of measles in 2026, including cases in Arizona (3), California (1), Florida (1), Georgia (1), North Carolina (6), Ohio (2), Oregon (1), South Carolina (145), Utah (9), and Virginia (2).

After a record-breaking year in 2025, we are already on track for an even bigger 2026!

The Measles Outbreaks of 2026

All together, measles outbreaks and cases in 2026 include:

  • an ongoing outbreak in South Carolina that is already up to 434 cases, including 145 cases in 2026, and with 409 people in quarantine and 17 in isolation (Oct 2025 – Jan 2026)
  • an ongoing outbreak in Utah that is already up to 9 cases, with new exposures in Kamas, Layton, St. George, and Salt Lake City (Dec 2025 – Jan 2026)
  • an ongoing outbreak in North Carolina (linked to an outbreak in South Carolina) is already up to 6 cases, with exposures in Ashville, McAdenville, and Gastonia (Dec 2025 – Jan 2026)

So that’s at least 173 cases, and it’s only January, which is not usually a big month for measles…

What does that mean?

It means folks should buckle up and make sure they are vaccinated and protected!

Protection from Measles

Fortunately, it’s usually not hard to protect yourself and your family from measles.

Remember that high risk infants can get an early MMR when they are just six months old! And toddlers can get their second MMR early too. This can help to control measles during an outbreak.

Just get vaccinated and protected!

What if you can’t?

What if you have a true medical exemption to getting the MMR vaccine or your baby is too young to be vaccinated?

Then you should do your best to avoid high risk situations and encourage folks around you to get vaccinated and protected.
