You have likely heard about the measles outbreak in Texas and New Mexico, and Kansas and Ohio and Oklahoma and everywhere else in the United States where measles is surging.

But did you know that there are also big outbreaks of measles in Canada?
The Measles Outbreak in Canada
Big outbreaks that might be linked to the big measles outbreak in Texas!

So far this year, there have been nearly 500 cases of measles in Canada, with the majority of cases in Ontario and Quebec.
Is that a lot?
“Measles has been eliminated in Canada since 1998, and therefore endemic transmission no longer takes place in the country. However, cases continue to occur sporadically, usually due to importation from regions where measles is circulating. Some imported cases result in time-limited outbreaks. From 1998 to 2024, there have been an average of 91 measles cases reported in Canada annually, with between 0 and 751 cases reported each year.”

It is more than five times the number seen in an average year — and that’s just counting the first three and a half months of the year!
And the ongoing outbreak in Ontario is adding hundreds of new cases every week.

Cases that are, not surprisingly, mostly in children and in those who are unvaccinated.
“An ongoing outbreak of measles in Ontario has been traced back to a large gathering in New Brunswick last fall that was attended by guests from Mennonite communities, the province’s top doctor says.”

Cases that public health experts in Canada are working very hard to control!

Working hard to control by recommending that everyone get vaccinated. Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario’s top public health official, has even recommended early doses of the MMR vaccine for young children and that all adults born after 1970 receive two doses.
“Adults (18+ years) born on or after 1970: A second dose of MMR vaccine is recommended.”
Dr. Kieran Moore, Chief Medical Officer of Health
A recommendation that might be a good idea for the United States too, as there was never a catch-up plan for all adults to get a second dose of MMR. Remember, children and high risk adults began to get a second dose in 1990.
“Similarly, a Dallas Morning News examination found that while some lawmakers are seizing on the moment to encourage vaccinations, others — particularly Republicans, up to and including the governor — have largely remained silent on the outbreak or on measles vaccination itself.”

Recommendations that are in sharp contrast to Bobby Kennedy’s recommendation to just take vitamin A and get measles if you want.
