COVID-19 Vaccination Goals
Of course, one of the first goals was simply to have a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine developed in 2020.
So we met that goal.
Both the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines were approved for use in the United States and the AstraZenca vaccine was approved in the UK in 2020.
We were a little short of the goal of vaccinating 20 million people in the US last December though.
“To interrupt virus transmission, we must fully immunize three-quarters of the U.S. population as soon as possible, preferably by the summer at the latest. That means roughly 500 million doses in five months — 100 million immunizations each month, not in 100 days.”
Peter Hotez on Biden’s new vaccine goal is more ambitious. It still isn’t enough.
What are some other COVID-19 vaccination goals you might have seen?
- President Joe Biden had set an initial goal of getting “at least 100 million covid vaccine shots into the arms of the American people in the first 100 days” that he is in office.
- COVAX plans to distribute 1.3 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccine 92 low- and middle-income economies by the end of 2021.
- COVAX is securing access to 2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccine by the end of 2021.
So when will everyone get vaccinated and protected?
Since the clinical trials for younger children are just getting started, you can imagine that it will be some time before everyone is vaccinated and protected.
But at least we are moving in the right direction!
Already we have seen our vaccination goals greatly expand to:
- 1.5 million vaccinations per day (is this everyday or just weekdays?) in the United States
- the full vaccination of 300 million Americans by the end of the summer or early fall, as we will get an additional 200 million doses of vaccine in early to mid summer
- having all adults in the United States be eligible to get a COVID-19 vaccine by May 1
So what do we have to do to meet these goals?
Mostly, as COVID-19 vaccine supply increases, we will need more and more people to administer it.
And places to hold mass immunization events, in addition to relying on hospitals, clinics, and health care providers to get folks vaccinated and protected.
More vaccines will help too!
How are we doing?
We will likely meet many goals early!
- we are already giving over 1.5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine a day, averaging about 2 million doses a day
- we have already given 100 million doses on day 58 of President Biden’s presidency, well ahead of his goal to give 100 doses in his first 100 days in office
Let’s keep it going and get everyone vaccinated and protected.
